MEDIA STATEMENT BY HON. JAMES NOMANE.  Appeal to MPs to Put the Country First (Monday 7 April 2025) Is Papua New Guinea better off since Honourable James Marape became Prime Minister in 2019? This is the key question that all MPs must ask themselves before the upcoming Vote of No Confidence (VONC) in April. All MPs must put the country first and not limit their focus to districts and provinces.  From 2019 to 2025 the cumulative budget total of the Marape government has been K156.8 billion, comprised of K39.9 billion (25%) debt financing and K116.9 billion (75%) tax revenue. This K39.9 billion debt is the highest incurred by any government since Independence and by the end of 2025 our national debt will reach K65.0 billion. This high level of debt will reduce investment in health and education and put more pressure on loan repayments.   We cannot see the cumulative effect of spending K156.8 billion in 6 years? Where are the notable public investments that are making ...

Our Pati Leader, Hon. Paita, has issued a press statement reaffirms Our Pati's unwavering support for the Pangu-led Government and PM Marape, ahead of impending vote of no confidence (VoNC).

"This is no time for political instability - it is a time for nation-building during a challenging period of our nation's history," said Paita, who also serves as Minister for Mining and Special Projects.

Paita added:

"Why does stability matter? Our Pati's own experience have shown that political instability comes at high cost for PNG - especially when the nation needs unity above all else. It erodes investors confidence, delays major projects, and disrupts governance.

Countries like Singapore, Rwanda, and Fiji have thrived by prioritizing stable leadership and policy consistency. PNG must do the same."

𝗠𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲:

That's quite amusing - considering many of these same individuals were, just months ago, touring the country calling for change, demanding for a new PM, and even insisting they be nominated as alternate PM.

Now, suddenly, they have discovered the gospel of "stability."

Let's be honest: PNG hasn't suffered from instability - it has suffered from stupidity and corruption.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀?

Because stability favours the corrupt and the incompetent.

As ChatGPT rightly puts it:

"Corrupt governments thrive off a false sense of stability - where power remains unchallenged, systems are locked down, and the appearance of order hides deep dysfunctions."

Meanwhile, good governance is dynamic - it welcomes accountability, demands transparency, and embraces reform. These are the principles that corruption fears most.

Countries like Fiji, Rwanda, and Singapore didn't rise by clinging to artificial "stability" - they progressed by promoting good governance, cracking down on corruption, ensuring competent leadership, and demanding accountability.

So when they say:

"Changing leaders or policies will destabilise the country,"

What they are really saying is:

"Let's maintain the status quo, so we can keep stealing, misusing public funds, and mismanaging the country's future - without consequence."

𝗠𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲:

If you've already proven yourself untrustworthy, and continue to prioritize political privilege and enrichment over the people, the least you can do is remain silent - until you earned back the public trust.

If there is any history being made - it's a party with 14 MPs being rewarded with just one ministerial portfolio.

Correction: That number is now 13 MPs, after the Hon Governor of Simbu officially joined the Opposition cacaus this morning.

In contrast, the URP - with just 11 MPs, is holding 6 ministerial portfolios. Where the convention or practice in the past has been, a party up to 3 MPs is rewarded with 1 Ministry; 6 MPs 2 Ministries and so forth, certainly never 14 MPs with 1 Ministry.
