Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea Launches Empowering Construction and Engineering Graduate Program for Women
The Australian High Commission in Papua New Guinea recently announced the commencement of the Construction and Engineering Graduate Program for Women in 2023. The program aims to empower women by providing hands-on experience in delivering Australian-funded infrastructure projects as part of Australia's Economic and Social Infrastructure Program.
Four women have been selected to participate in the two-year program, gaining valuable experience in critical electrification upgrades, market redevelopments, and the construction of a new health facility. Marsha Aruani, a recent graduate of the Bachelor of Architecture program at the PNG University of Technology, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, "Every day I am learning so many new things."
Ms. Aruani highlighted some of her experiences in the program, including using new technical tools, designing layouts for solar battery generation systems, interpreting construction drawings, and participating in stakeholder coordination meetings. She expressed her honor and privilege in contributing to a team dedicated to delivering infrastructure services to areas, places, and people in need.
The program acknowledges the increasingly significant role of women in construction and engineering in Papua New Guinea. Its goal is to equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to support PNG's development, drive the growing economy, and facilitate Australia's investments in critical economic and social infrastructure across PNG.
The four participants in the Construction and Engineering Graduate Program for Women are Amanda Kiap, Esther Isimel, Marsha Aruani, and Janal Numapo. Their involvement reflects a commitment to gender diversity and the advancement of women in the construction and engineering sectors.
The program represents a key initiative in the #PNGAusPartnership, demonstrating a collaborative effort between Australia and Papua New Guinea to foster sustainable development and economic growth through investment in infrastructure and the empowerment of women in these critical fields.
