MEDIA STATEMENT BY HON. JAMES NOMANE.  Appeal to MPs to Put the Country First (Monday 7 April 2025) Is Papua New Guinea better off since Honourable James Marape became Prime Minister in 2019? This is the key question that all MPs must ask themselves before the upcoming Vote of No Confidence (VONC) in April. All MPs must put the country first and not limit their focus to districts and provinces.  From 2019 to 2025 the cumulative budget total of the Marape government has been K156.8 billion, comprised of K39.9 billion (25%) debt financing and K116.9 billion (75%) tax revenue. This K39.9 billion debt is the highest incurred by any government since Independence and by the end of 2025 our national debt will reach K65.0 billion. This high level of debt will reduce investment in health and education and put more pressure on loan repayments.   We cannot see the cumulative effect of spending K156.8 billion in 6 years? The explosion of Annette Sete as PNG's biggest retail SME success story of recent times culminated in her win as SME of the Year last night – and the keys to her own Hino truck from Ela Motors!

Earlier in the night at the annual PNG SME Awards, after picking up the SME Retailer of the Year for the 3rd year in a row, the founder of the Maku Gifts accessories and fabric chain (now with 6 shops and employing 67 people nationwide), made the surprise call to re-gift the award to another SME "who has grown with us" – Barata PNG's Christopher Lam, whose line of street apparel – from caps and bucket hats to men's shirts – are sold in her shops.

"Tonight I'd like to help another SME in the space grow as well," she said, adding to Christopher as he joined her on the APEC Haus stage, "Sorry to put you on the spot!"

Another big winner on the night was SME Business runner-up Evelyn Mopafi of Apo Meri – who sells the bilums, baskets, pottery and handcrafts of over 1000 Eastern Highlands women through her POM craft market stall and Facebook page – who won K20,000 from BSP, and also K5000 from Women's Microbank for the Janet Sape Resilient Business Woman Award, along with the Kina Bank eCommerce Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees!
