Australia did not then recognized dual citizenship, so anyone choosing to become a Papua New Guinean lost their Australian passports. Many Australians left at that time. But others, looked upon PNG as their home, even if it means losing their Australian birthright. Late Sir Brian and wife Jean Bell were among them.

Jean died in 1992 while Sir Brian lived on until 25th July 2010. Both were buried side by side at the 9 Mile Cemetery outside Port Moresby (Sinclair, J. 2010. MR B: The Life and Times of Sir Brian Bell).
