Fourteen (14) people are dead in a tragic road accident along the Highlands Highway at Tomba in the Western Highlands Province, last Friday.

Five others survived and are being treated in hospital.

Its alleged a Toyota land cruiser occupied by three people - a male driver and two females - was travelling from Wabag to Mt. Hagen when it collided with a 25 seater PMV bus which was heading towards Wabag from Mt. Hagen.

Police say the PMV bus was overloaded with cargo and passengers.

Police are yet to establish the cause of the accident but according to eye-witnesses, both vehicles were travelling at high speed and failed to avoid each other.

Police say 14 people - 7 males and 7 females - died at the accident scene while locals rushed to the scene to rescue those trapped inside the vehicles.

A child was among the five that were rushed to the Mt. Hagen General Hospital.

The horrific road accident was witnessed by a long convoy of vehicles for late Dr. Samson Amean, Enga's longest serving Provincial Administrator, whose casket was repatriated from Port Moresby through Kagamuga Airport to Wabag.

Enga police units engaged in escort protocols for the convoy, extracted the bodies with the help of villagers.

Meantime, police have warned vehicles travelling on the highway to always follow road safety rules.
