Press Release - Marape - Rosso Government 2022, 11 October 2022.

A week ago Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Hon. Dr. Lino Tom with his delegation returned from Vienna, Austria, after signing the country’s Country Program Framework and Technical Corporation Program with the International Atomic Energy Agency(IAEA).

This agreement is critical which will pave the way to receive technical support from IAEA for cancer facilities in the country. Most importantly, the IAEA will support PMGH Cancer Center facilities meet International set standards so radioactive material for cancer treatment is brought into the country.

This morning before the Parliament session, Minister Lino and Health Secretary Dr. Osborne Liko and senior staff of the National Department of Health visited the PMGH Cancer Center under construction.

Accompanying Minister Lino was the Shadow Minister for Health, also a former Minister for Health, Hon. Elias Kapavore. Having a Shadow Minister attending an event with a Government Minister shows the commitment on both sides of the house to improve the health of our people.

Important stakeholders present were Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited Managing Director Mr. Wapu Sonk, the funding partner toward the heart and cancer projects, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NISIT) Director General Mr. Victor Gabi, the IAEA regulatory representative in the country and Board Member and Chair of PMGH Board Projects and Facilities committee Mr. Luke Liria and key Government Agency representatives.

The presence of all stakeholders showed a commitment to ensure the PMGH Cancer Center is functional.

With the funding of K50million in 2022 budget allocation(of which K27million is yet to be released) and funding support of K74 million in 2023 budget, the country will be proud to have a world class Cancer Center by the end of 2023.

With other specialized services including cardiac and kidney in place by 2025, we as a country will celebrate 50 years of Independence with a specialized health care which we can rely on.

Note: Prime Minister Jame Marape commented that our hope to not have our people seeking health services offshore, we getting up to Lae and Port Moresby as our specialist hospitals.

By this time next year, Marape Rosso Government will do all heart and cancer operations in Papua New Guinea and we will move towards kidney and liver treatment facilities in the country.

This is your Marape Rosso Government at work to make sure Port Moresby General Hospital Cancer Center is functional to safe many lives in the country and reduce death rate.

Slowly but surely,  one step at a time.
